If you are in the Hair and Beauty industry, you get to highlight your talents and creativity. You get to build your personality and express yourself by helping other people look and feel fabulous.

Travel the globe

Hair and Beauty are a global industry. If you have your toolkit in hand (scissors and makeup brushes), you can work anywhere! Most product manufacturers and organisations hold conferences, training and shows internationally and we would encourage to take part in these events. Not only do you get to see new parts of the world, but you are given the chance to learn about how Hair and Beauty work abroad, network with others and see what trends and techniques are emerging across the globe.

A job for life?

In terms of job security, you are guaranteed a job for life! Keep up to date with your training, education and the latest trends and you will never be short of work. If your passion shines through there will be a rewarding career for you.

There are loads of opportunities

There are so many competitions to take part in to help you make a name for yourself, whether on a local or international scale. There is no shortage of opportunities to compete, (check out the world skills competition), and show how good you really are. You may get the opportunity to do photo shoots, stage work or you could even become an ambassador or educator for a brand. Who knows you may even come and join us as the next champion of raising the standards.

Variety is the spice of life!

One day you could be creating a lovely up-do for a prom, the next day you could be helping a bride design her make up for the big day. The more skills you learn, the more variety you will have in your career! The more fun you will have!

So Get Qualified

If you are entering the sector and looking to start your training, give careful consideration to the training provider and the courses they offer,  You will want to ensure you are trained to the highest professional standards, and that your qualification is nationally recognised,  so you are easily able to obtain insurance from a range of reputable companies. Exacting standards and professionalism ensure your clients have safe and effective treatments, that you develop an excellent reputation, and that your business is successful.

Ofqual is the Office of Qualifications and Examination Regulation, it is a government department that regulates qualifications, exams, and tests. It is often referred to as the exam ‘watchdog’. Ofqual recognises Awarding Organisations (AO), and only recognised awarding organisations can offer ‘regulated’ qualifications. In this way, Ofqual makes sure only those organisations that have the appropriate resources, capability and expertise can award regulated qualifications.

In the hair and beauty sector there are many Awarding Organisations that are regulated by Ofqual such as CIBTAC, City & Guilds, Focus, Pearson, TQUK, VTCT.

Be Insured

So, make sure you have a comprehensive insurance policy in place. Once you are practising as a member you get access to industry leading insurance at a discounted rate

Keep Updated with

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

The Hair and Beauty sector is a very fast-paced, creative, ever-changing industry where new treatments, services, trends, and techniques are continually developing. Because of this continual change, we recommend that you frequently refresh and update your skills and knowledge. Often professionals look to undertake 30 hrs of CPD each year. If you are a Teacher/ Trainer/ Assessor check with your Awarding body so you are aware of what hours they stipulate, this will be checked by the Internal Quality Assessor (IQA) as well as an External Quality Assessor (EQA) to ensure you are up to date.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR JOB?

I Love Reading and Learning about the Skin Which Is Our Biggest Organ.

Teaching Clients to Take Proper Care of Their Skin by helping them understand how the Skin operates and what it likes.

Watching Skin Improve and Become Bright and Healthy.

Reading Regularly About the Gut, Cutting Edge Aesthetics Equipment, new products and formulations plus books Written by leading Dermatologists.

Its Lifelong Learning for Me!

WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULTS TO CONSIDER A CAREER IN THE HAIR AND BEAUTY SECTOR?

I think that the industry has shown great resilience even during Covid and that should be reassuring to anyone wanting to entering the sector. The industry is tough but incredibly rewarding and the appreciation you get from clients is incredibly rewarding on a personal level.

The opportunities are endless, it depends on what you want to do and that could be starting in a Salon or working on a Cruise Ship. Then move onto getting more qualifications under your belt and teaching or alternatively going into Aesthetics. I, personally love Electro-Epilation and built up a strong clientele for this, especially as it is more of a specialised treatment  and not a compulsory part of training any more .  Earlier on in my career I worked alongside hairdressers which I loved it and it worked so perfectly with beauty services.

Self-Employment opportunities are also endless.

Laser clinics have opened everywhere and some people seem to be incredibly good at this.  The Skin Laundry and skin are a good sound example of this.

If you have an artistic flair then nails and make up are suitable and for those that like their anatomy and physiology then Skin Care and Aesthetics are an ideal match.

WHAT’S THE BEST THINGS ABOUT WORKING IN THIS SECTOR?

Its fast paced and there are new machines, products and techniques entering the market all the time and this means you simply never get bored or stand still for too long!
