The Beauty, Hair and Wellbeing APPG have launched the UV safety report - ‘The case for a national UV safety strategy’.
This is a very comprehensive report, and we look forward to the recommendations being implemented as soon as possible.
The report highlights that 7 people die each day in the UK from melanoma , and according to Cancer Research UK an estimated 86% are entirely preventable. We must do more.
As a sector this is one of the most important things we can teach our students, and encourage qualified professionals saw to also be trained.
There are many recommendations in the report, all are necessary. One recommendation is that all education and training courses in hairdressing, barbering and beauty therapy should include compulsory modules on identifying suspicious models or lesions so clients can be advised to see professional medical advice. We wholeheartedly agree with this statement.
Había have been working with SKCIN Charity (skcin.org) for 7 years to raise awareness of this issue and encourage everyone to undertake their training- educators, students, practitioners, everyone across the sector. Their MASCED course ‘trains eyes to save lives’. This is only one aspect of what is needed, together we can do so much more, and we fully recommend everyone reads the report and works together to tackle this preventable crisis.
